VexFest: Mr. Belvedere

By Sarah Poulton

YOUNGSTOWN — After nearly 12 hours of alcohol consumption in downtown Youngstown’s West Federal Street, 20-somethings at Vexfest were looking for a great club scene.

Core came to the rescue.

From about 10:15 p.m. until closing time, DJs were mixing it up on the Maynestream stage inside Core.

Josh Kady, member of Groove Conductor, also does a solo act under the name Mr. Belvedere. While the true rock fans were outside watching Via Sahara and Asleep, Mr. Belvedere was spinning away for the techno crowd.

His mix sounded like it came straight from a rave. It was very traditional— music everyone could dance to.

Those prepared for the moment enjoyed Kady immensely. Those who prefer the straight-edge way of life may have felt like they were playing Dance Revolution in the middle of Southern Park Mall.

While his music wasn’t risqué, or even the least bit edgy, Mr. Belvedere did everyone a favor: He reminded us what good, old-fashioned rave music sounds like.

Unlike artists such as Paul Oakenfold, Mr. Belvedere didn’t try to go over the edge. He kept it simple. And sometimes simple is all you need.

This wasn’t a rave, This wasn’t a hip night club in the middle of New York City; it’s downtown Youngstown and Mr. Belvedere provided Core with some great background music and a great wind-down of VexFest.

The set was all house music that is banged in clubs from Dublin to Dusseldorf, Cabo to Copenhagen but mostly Chicago and San Francisco, not raves. It wasn't indicative of rave music or techno. Those parties have a lot of DJ's playing breakbeat, trance, garage, and hard techno (Euro). While i do spin detroit and swedish tek also, the set i spun was all funk.
