UPDATE: "Frayed Blue Jeans" video released. Watch here!
NORTH LIMA – A quiet country field turned into a little bit of Hollywood Sunday night, as Matt Palka filmed his first music video.
The video was being filmed by Youngstown's Chris Rutushin, of River & Heron Productions, for the song "Frayed Blue Jeans."
Sunday night, they invited friends to be in the video and brought out a collection of Youngstown arts figures, including The Zou who appeared to be the band in the party scene.
Playing the video's leading lady in frayed blue jeans was community theater actress and Youngstown State University theater student Roxanne Hauldren.
"It was a lot of fun," Hauldren said. "We filmed for like, three days straight."
She described the song as "catchy," with a sound similar to Jack Johnson or John Mayer.
"Frayed Blue Jeans" is track two on an album that accompanies Palka's novel, "Moment in the Sun."
Palka is originally from Western Ohio and is a graduate of Ohio University, as is Rutushin. But they didn't meet at school, they met on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Palka has been living out of a Volkswagen Bus touring the country, which is being documented at MattPalka.com. Palka and Rutushin have also been working together on projects for the tour, and Palka has a cameo appearance in Rutushin's film, "Fine-Tune."
Although Palka doesn't necessarily call one town home, he said that he enjoys working in the Mahoning Valley with the people and artists here.
"There's a great generation with this artistic movement with the music scene here," he said. "The potential here is incredible."
The video for "Frayed Blue Jeans" will be released by the end of October, and will be available by visiting MattPalka.com or myspace.com/mattpalka.
