Shortest Day to headline first show

By Katie Libecco

After playing together as friends for years and a band for just months, Shortest Day will be headlining The Cellar Sept. 15.

"It's a great opportunity and we're looking forward to to it," drummer Brandon Giovanne said. "We hope everyone enjoys it."

The band, including Giovanne's brother Jeremiah Hall, started playing together eight years ago. But it wasn't until they found their singer, Brent Beck, that things clicked. Giovanne said they met him in March, played their first show in May and are now headlining shows.

Giovanne was reluctant to list his former bands or any of their members.

"We don't want to be known to old bands. We didn't have a good name, a good following, so we don't want to use old band names," he said.

He described the sound of the band as metalcore, with Poison the Well and 36 Crazyfists.

"We just try to play our heart out, show that we're playing our heart out. Music- and performance-wise," he said.

The Sept. 15 show includes Erin's Vineyard, Columbus-based Scene of the Crime, A Tragedy Within and Secondhand Suicide as opening acts.

Giovanne said Shortest Day took a lot of time to study the bands and their stage shows to select them for the performance.

"We feel the bands are very proper for the night. We look forward to watching them, and hope our fans look forward to watching them, too."

When it comes to their performance, Giovanne said the band feels they have an intense stage show, moving around a lot and getting fans involved. He said they also have a few tricks fans haven't seen before that they'll pull out Sept. 15.

"We hope it jump starts us, gets us a little more known in the area. It means a lot to us," he said. "It's more a thank-you, also, to all the fans we've known over the years who haven't given up on us."
