UPDATE: PHOTOS AND VIDEO -- Rocky Horror and more Halloween happenings
YOUNGSTOWN - Valley24.com is once again sponsoring The Zou’s Rocky Horror Show on Halloween at Cedars Lounge.
“We’ve done this before, but every year we try to take it to the next level, or at least another level,” Khaled Tabbara, The Zou’s lead singer, says. “Last year it was more spacey, more on a Flaming Lips level. This year we’re just trying to rock it.”
On Saturday, The Zou will perform an original set and another set covering music from “The Rocky Horror Show.”
Other acts slated to perform include Rachel’s Secret Stache (Akron) and Flotation Walls (Columbus) . Rachel’s Secret Stache previously performed at Cedars with The Zou at the release of “Archaeopteryx.”
There will also be a costume contest with Viking Jim from WNCD 93.3-FM’s The Homegrown Show. Prizes include gift certificates to Indie Wax, tickets to The Oakland Center for the Arts and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and T-shirts from Defend Youngstown and the bands and CDs from the bands.
This year, The Zou’s performance is dedicated to John Rakin.
Tabbara says when he was a teenager, Rakin introduced “The Rocky Horror Show” to him and friend, Lee Prosenjak.
Tabbara says Rakin was killed in a car accident this year.
“This is kind of dedicated to John for being a great friend and getting us into this,” Tabbara says.
Tabbara says as Rocky Horror brought he and Prosenjak together, The Zou’s Rocky Horror tradition “creates life long fans.”
“We want people to get into The Zou, also,” Tabbara says. “So if we’re going to cover these songs, we’re going to showcase what we’re all about. It feels like we should give it a ‘Zou treatment.’”
Also at Saturday’s show, The Zou’s recording of Rocky Horror songs will be available for purchase. Tabbara says they’re sold about 700 copies online and about 500 printed copies so far.
Tabbara says he’s also looking forward to seeing a performance of “The Rocky Horror Show” at The Oakland, directed by Robert Dennick Joki, who did not return phone calls for this story.
According to a press release, The Oakland will stage Richard O’Brien’s cult-hit musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” which will run Oct. 30 to Nov. 14. There will be midnight shows, the only time audience interaction is encouraged, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (55+) and $10 for students.
