Northeastern Ohio can be gloomy during the winter, and many people find it difficult to discover beauty in the dreary, gray landscape.

Recognizing beauty isn’t a problem for landscape photographer and Kinsman resident Rebecca S. Nieminen.

Nieminen’s images of area rural life, including farmyard cows and tractors, country churches, weathered barns and vibrant sunrises and sunsets, have gained recognition and praise.

During January, Nieminen’s work will be featured at Trumbull Art Gallery when she is honored as TAG’s artist of the month. All works on display will also be for sale.

“I have always found peace and rejuvenation in nature and joy and freedom through artistic expression,” Nieminen said. “I tell people there’s always beauty to see around them if they just look for it.”

Many of Nieminen’s photographs look almost like paintings and have a soft, dream-like quality with gorgeous golden light and dramatic, colorful skies.

Nieminen achieves her photographic magic in part through shooting her landscapes primarily at sunrise or sunset.

“It is always a compliment when people tell me I can take an ordinary scene they see every day and make it appear extraordinary,” she said.

The majority of Nieminen’s images feature scenes from northern Trumbull and southern Ashtabula counties, but her body of work also includes landscapes captured in Amish country, at Lake Erie and in different regions of Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Her TAG show will feature about 15 photographs of local landscapes.

Nieminen started Storyteller Photography: Images by Rebecca in 2013 as a studio specializing in portraiture.

Before opening her photography business she worked as a journalist and college writing instructor at Youngstown State University.

She has a bachelor’s in journalism and a master’s in English. Nieminen said she will always think of herself as a writer first, but added “photography has been a longtime love as well.”

She minored in photography while earning her bachelor’s degree at Youngstown State University.

Nieminen is currently compiling a book of photographs and poetry. She is also working on a historical novel. To learn more, go to
