In Defense

By Alicia Delvaux

May 21, 2008

Last week I had the pleasure of listening to an interview with Phil Kidd, Director of Downtown Events, on the show Lincoln Avenue with Sherry Linkon.

My favorite quote is this: "When you're in all of this...it's kind of like climbing a mountain...This is literally a war in the sense that you're fighting severe issues, when you have severe poverty, you have severe crime, you have socioeconomic issues across the board that stem from all these things." - Phil Kidd

I'll admit the Northeast Ohio region (and I imagine the rest of the Rustbelt) has a figurative war-weary mentality (in addition to the larger sense of war-weariness our nation feels right now) so Phil's comment about fighting a battle really stuck out to me. And while I'm pretty thankful right now that, given the economy and in light of other world events, I have a job and a roof over my head and family and friends to love, I too can feel the weariness like a long, slow ache.

Give the interview a listen. It's worth it.
